The sale of a domestic animal is subject to many rules and regulations. Without entering into too much detail, several provisions of the Civil and Rural Codes lay out the obligations, rights and duties of buyers and sellers. These rules apply to everyone without exception. They are qualified as rules of Common Law and generally appear in the paragraph “General Conditions” of the Sales Agreement.

Over and above these already coded rules, buyers and sellers may determine other conditions which can be found under the paragraph “Special Conditions”. The latter conditions carry the same weight as the former. They relate to :
  • the price, which may be different according to the context, e.g. whether the kitten will be simply a household companion or will be used for breeding and/or contests.
  • the return to the Cattery if the kitten had to leave its new home prematurely.
  • reproduction, so that the work of the breeder (improvements to the standards of the race, genetic follow-up, co-ancestry…) is not destroyed by inconsidered breeding on the part of the buyer.
  • selling the kitten or adult cat to a third party…

You will come to see, if you haven’t already done so, that the more they fascinate you, the more demanding you will become.
